A bundle of new knowledge and skills is considered "core learning" when it creates an entry-point for an explosion of additional understanding and capabilities. Like a seed that may grow and spread to become a forest, the possibilities within that pivotal core learning event are too vast to predict. But it is certain that there can be no forest without that first germination.
Learning to read opens up the knowledge of the ages to us. Creating the diatonic scale made all of western music possible –from Baroque to Hip Hop. Using the "on" and "off" of electrical circuitry to mimic human thinking created the computer age.
